The ILLR project explores the cultural history of Rhodes during its significant period from 164 BC to AD 44, focusing on its transformation from an economic power to a cultural hub. It employs various theoretical frameworks to analyze ancient intellectual life and its influence on Greco-Roman culture.
ILLR is the first intellectual and cultural history of Rhodes centered on a seminal period of its cultural prominence between itsalliance with Rome (164 BC), where its financial and military power was curtailed and it became semi-autonomous, and itsincorporation into the province of Asia (AD 44) by the Emperor Claudius.
