This project aims to enhance computer vision by developing methods for automatic scene understanding from digital images. It focuses on identifying objects, estimating their 3-D poses, and segmenting visual elements using advanced statistical models and hierarchical context classification.
The field of statistical pattern recognition of visual information using digital images is experiencing a boom of scientific discoveries and technological applications.
The ultimate goal of this field is to make computers “understand” a scene captured with a digital camera, in the following way: given a still picture, how can a computer automatically identify what is present (image annotation and context identification), and estimate the 3-D pose and segmentation of the visual objects.
