This project seeks to develop a framework for automating the detection and classification of building objects using visual and spatial data. The goal is to streamline the creation of accurate 3D models of existing infrastructure, reducing time and costs associated with construction projects.
There is a lack of viable methods to map and label existing infrastructure.
This is one of the grand challenges of engineering in the 21st century noted by the “Restoring and Improving Urban Infrastructure” report of the US National Academy of Engineering (NAE).
For instance, over two thirds of the effort needed to model even simple infrastructure is spent on manually converting a cloud of points to a 3D model.
