This project seeks to reform the current Intellectual Property Rights system for pharmaceuticals to improve access to essential medicines. It proposes a two-tiered patent system that allows for more affordable drug pricing while encouraging innovation in the pharmaceutical sector.
We seek to develop a plan for amending the current Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) regime for rewarding pharmaceutical innovations.
The existing IPR regime is highly problematic.
This has become obvious in the wake of a series of public health emergencies, most notably the AIDS crisis, which pits the vital needs of poor patients against the need of pharmaceutical companies to recoup their investments.
