This project investigates the role of interleukin-17 receptor D in psoriasis, an autoimmune disease affecting millions. It aims to identify new therapeutic targets within the interleukin-17 family to improve treatment options for patients suffering from this chronic condition.
Psoriasis is the most prevalent autoimmune disease, affecting approximately 125 million people worldwide.
In Ireland alone it costs the health care system approximately 30 million euro yearly.
Psoriasis is characterised by inflamed scaly red psoriatic plaques on the epidermis of sufferers and 20% of patients develop severe psoriasis, which is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome.
