This project investigates how the immune system eliminates the typhoid-causing bacterium Salmonella Typhi. By identifying key host genes and mechanisms, it aims to enhance understanding of host-pathogen interactions and develop new treatments for typhoid fever.
Typhoid fever is a life-threatening systemic infection that continues to be a serious global health concern, claiming the lives of over 200,000 patients every year.
It is caused by the intracellular bacterium Salmonella Typhi, a human-adapted pathogen unable to infect species others than humans.
The molecular mechanisms underlying S.
Typhi infection are only partially understood.
Spanò and Galán recently discovered an antimicrobial pathway that is required to restrict the growth of S.
