This project aims to reduce arsenic levels in rice through advanced breeding techniques. By mapping genetic traits associated with low arsenic content, the research seeks to develop rice varieties that are safe for consumption, particularly in regions affected by contaminated irrigation.
High levels of arsenic in rice grains threaten the health of millions of people particularly in the Ganges delta of India and Bangladesh where arsenic-contaminated irrigation water is used for rice cultivation.
It is of global importance that this problem is tackled and that Indian scientists are able to contribute to the solution.
