Project MAREST aims to explore how marine benthic communities responded to historical sea-level changes during the Mesozoic era. By integrating stratigraphy and palaeoecology, the project seeks to understand community dynamics and environmental impacts over geological time.
Modern sea-level and climate changes have a strong potential to shift biological communities into novel states that have not present-day analogues, leaving ecologists with no observation basis to predict the likely biotic effects.
