This project investigates the use of ammonia as a carbon-free fuel in marine engines by co-firing it with hydrogen to improve combustion efficiency and reduce harmful emissions. Advanced combustion techniques are explored to address the challenges of ammonia combustion, including high emissions of nitrogen oxides.
Ammonia (NH3) has gained popularity in recent years as a potential carbon-free fuel, particularly for nautical applications.
However, there are clear difficulties in using ammonia as a fuel directly in diesel engine applications due to high auto-ignition temperature, unstable flames and inefficient burning.
This issue could be effectively solved by co-firing ammonia with more reactive fuels to improve combustion features.
