MedMaD explores maritime transport in the Mediterranean during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, focusing on the movement of diverse groups, including migrants and refugees. The project analyzes how steamships facilitated mass mobility and the implications for social and political dynamics in the region.
During the second half of the nineteenth century, the technological revolution profoundly reshaped maritime transport, accelerating the circulation of passengers and allowing steamships to be used for the first time to move large masses of people across the sea cheaply.
