This project aims to overcome the limitations of modern microscopy caused by shot noise. By implementing multi-pass microscopy techniques with photons and electrons, it seeks to enhance sensitivity for imaging nanometric particles, improving the study of biological specimens at a molecular level.
The sensitivity of modern microscopy is limited by shot-noise.
It limits the accuracy of measurements of specimen properties as well as the spatial resolution of electron microscopes when imaging sensitive specimens, such as proteins or DNA.
But the shot-noise limit is not a fundamental limit. A technologically feasible and optimal approach to overcoming the shot-noise limit is to have each probe particle interact with the specimen multiple times.
