This project addresses environmental pollution caused by zinc mining in Brazil. It focuses on understanding the mineralogy of mine wastes and developing biotechnological methods for treating acid mine drainage and recovering metals, while also assessing the impact on agricultural soils.
Mining in the State of Minas Gerais (Brazil) is one of the activites with the strongest impact on the environment: heavy metals (Zn, Cd and Pb) and metalloids (As) pollute surface water, sediments and irrigated agricultural soils.
This is a major drawback of this economical important activity.
