This project focuses on developing advanced methods for studying major depression by phenotyping mouse models. It aims to create automated protocols to assess behaviors associated with depression, enhancing understanding and screening for antidepressant effects.
Major depression is a potentially life-threatening illness affecting 10-15% of the population and causing an enormous economic burden (Euros 120 billions/year in Europe), also due to incomplete efficacy of antidepressants.
The most relevant cause of this is the poor knowledge of the neural basis for mood regulation that has to be attributed, among other factors, to the limited information gathered from animal models.
