This project investigates horizontal gene transfer in bacteria, focusing on the natural transformation process that allows bacteria to acquire genetic material from their environment. The research aims to elucidate the mechanisms of DNA transfer and its implications for antibiotic resistance.
A common form of gene transfer is the vertical gene transfer between one organism and its offspring during sexual reproduction.
However, some organisms, such as bacteria, are able to acquire genetic material independently of sexual reproduction by horizontal gene transfer (HGT).
