This project focuses on developing a platform for creating anti-retroviral microbicides to prevent HIV-1 infection. It aims to optimize drug formulations by understanding drug transport mechanisms in cervicovaginal and colorectal tissues, ultimately leading to improved microbicide products for clinical trials.
The 40% protection against HIV-1 infection with vaginally-applied tenofovir gel demonstrated in the CAPRISA004 trial, has emphasized development of anti-retroviral (ARV)-based microbicides.
