This project focuses on developing a new type of urinary catheter made from a patented antibacterial material called NANOELAST. The goal is to prevent catheter-associated urinary tract infections, which are common and serious complications, by stopping bacterial attachment and growth on the catheter surface.
Indwelling urinary catheters are life-saving medical devices that are widely used in hospitals and nursing homes to relieve a patient from urinary retention and incontinence.
However, prolonged use of these catheters in the urinary tract leads to a life-threatening and disturbingly common complication, called catheter associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI). CAUTIs are mainly caused by bacteria and affect nearly 10 million patients every year globally.
