This project aims to improve the efficiency of thermoelectric materials that convert waste heat into electricity. It focuses on overcoming the limitations of current materials by exploring new nanostructured designs and developing advanced simulation tools.
Roughly one-third of all energy consumption ends up as low-grade heat.
Thermoelectric (TE) materials could potentially convert vast amounts of this waste heat into electricity and reduce the dependence on fossil fuels.
State-of-the-art nanostructured materials with record-low thermal conductivities (κ~1-2W/mK) have recently demonstrated large improvements in conversion efficiencies, but not high enough to enable large scale implementation.
