This project focuses on understanding the structure and function of Cys-loop receptors, which are crucial for neurotransmission. By investigating these receptors, particularly the serotonin 5-HT3 receptor, the research aims to provide insights that could lead to better therapeutic applications.
In the brain, fast neurotransmission involves the release of neurotransmitters in the synapse, their binding to specific receptors, which then open and let ions flow over the postsynaptic membrane.
