The project aims to enhance sustainable remediation of contaminated land by integrating social sustainability indicators with environmental and economic measures. It seeks to develop a framework that incorporates stakeholder assessments to ensure that remediation strategies are socially acceptable and effective.
The management of contaminated land has moved through different stages over the last few decades, each stage being characterized by a specific approach.
The most recent stage is that of sustainable remediation, whereby decisions on the management of contaminated sites have to be sustainable across all the three pillars of sustainable development (environmental, economic and social).
