The NO-MND project investigates the role of non-neuronal cells in the degeneration of motor neurons, specifically in diseases like Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and Spinal Muscular Atrophy. It aims to develop in vitro models and explore the therapeutic potential of transplanting these cells to combat these disorders.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) are fatal diseases characterized by selective degeneration of motor neurons without any effective treatment.
Non-neuronal cells like astrocytes play a key role in the pathogenesis of ALS and SMA.
Understanding the mechanisms of cell death caused by non-neuronal cells is a major research target and it has been proposed that transplantation of non-neuronal cells can represent a new therapeutic strategy for these disorders.
