This project investigates the use of graphic symbols in historical documents from the 4th to 10th centuries. It aims to understand how these symbols influenced literacy and social participation, particularly among illiterates, by creating a database of these symbols for further research.
The use of graphic symbols in documentary records from the 4th to the 10th c. has so far received scant attention. ‘Graphic symbols’ are graphic signs (including alphabetical ones) drawn as a visual unit in a written text and representing something other than a word.
They therefore broadly cover the semantic spectrum of the Latin ‘notae’ (signs) as opposed to ‘litterae’ (letters of the alphabet).
