The Objects of Contention project examines the art and craft produced in the French penal colony of New Caledonia, exploring the intersection of creativity and oppression. It also investigates the creative practices of the Indigenous Kanak people, providing insights into their historical experiences.
In recent years, the creative practices of individuals subjected to various forms of captivity have become a vibrant field of study known as carceral aesthetics.
