OCEAN DEOXYFISH aims to understand how expanding oxygen minimum zones affect marine fish populations. By studying fish behavior and physiology in low-oxygen environments, the project seeks to inform conservation strategies and sustainable fisheries management.
Climate-driven reductions in dissolved oxygen (DO) of the global ocean interior (ocean deoxygenation) is leading to expansion of permanent oxygen minimum zones (OMZ) that comprise about 7% of ocean volume.
