This project investigates past deep ocean circulation changes to improve climate models. By analyzing deep-sea sediment cores, it aims to clarify the timing and pathways of ocean circulation during abrupt climate events.
The deep ocean circulation affects climate and the global carbon cycle. A prerequisite for improving confidence in future climate projections is the accurate reproduction of past deep ocean circulation changes by models.
However our understanding of such changes in terms of transport pathways and transit times is impeded by ambiguities in the chronology of ocean archives.
