The OPT-bCPAP project aims to scale up the use of bubble continuous positive airway pressure devices for treating pneumonia in children in Nigeria and Ethiopia. It focuses on improving access to life-saving respiratory support and understanding treatment challenges in high-burden areas.
Pneumonia is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality especially among children in sub-Saharan Africa.
Nigeria and Ethiopia are among the 5 countries that account for half of the under-five pneumonia deaths.
Majority of the deaths from pneumonia are however preventable with early diagnosis and appropriate management.
In children with pneumonia, hypoxemia is quite common and constitutes a major risk factor for death.
