This project aims to understand the regulation of insulin secretion in Type 2 diabetes by studying the cellular mechanisms in the pancreas. Using advanced imaging and optogenetic techniques, it seeks to identify therapeutic targets for restoring insulin function and improving glucose homeostasis.
Type 2 diabetes mellitus, one of the major healthcare challenges of our time, is characterized by failure of beta cells to functionally adapt to increased peripheral insulin resistance.
The resulting chronic elevations in blood glucose concentration are associated with heart, kidney, liver, nerve and retinal disease, as well as cancer.
