This project explores a novel approach to cancer treatment by utilizing donor T cells that can recognize and attack cancer cells. By genetically modifying patient T cells with specific receptors from donor T cells, it aims to enhance the immune response against tumors, particularly in organs that can be replaced.
Despite recent advances in cancer immunotherapy, most patients with metastatic cancer are not cured.
Major reasons are lack of homogeneously and highly expressed molecules that can be safely targeted and evoke efficient T-cell responses. I propose that the strong T-cell responses leading to rejection of transplanted organs can be exploited to “reject” cancer by specific recognition of tissue-restricted targets.
