This project investigates the development of the marine priapulid worm Priapulus caudatus to understand the evolution of the endomesoderm in animals. It employs advanced imaging techniques to characterize embryonic development and its implications for animal evolution.
The emergence of the endomesoderm in metazoan evolution was fundamental for the morphological diversification of animals.
It promoted interactions between different tissues that led to novel structures and organs, such as the heart, bones, and kidneys.
