This project investigates how the Plasmodium falciparum parasite regulates its virulence genes through a process called antigenic variation. By studying a novel protein family, PfAlba, the research aims to uncover mechanisms of gene expression and chromatin biology that could enhance understanding of malaria pathology.
Antigenic variation is a common strategy utilized by intracellular pathogens to evade immune detection.
Plasmodium falciparum, the causal agent of the most lethal form of malaria, modulates antigenic variation of the ~60 member 'var' virulence gene family by exhibiting mutually exclusive, monoallelic expression.
