This research investigates the role of viral proteins in marine photosynthesis, particularly how they influence the function of cyanobacteria. It aims to understand the genetic and biochemical interactions that affect oceanic primary production.
Cyanobacteria play a key role in marine photosynthesis, contributing almost 50% of primary production in oligotrophic regions of the ocean.
Marine cyanophages were recently discovered to carry photosystem II (PSII) genes, and it was suggested that these genes increase phage fitness by helping the phages to maintain photosynthesis in the infected bacterial cells.
