Plants respond to and must distinguish between beneficial and pathogenic bacteria (‘friend and foe’) surrounding them.
Bacteria may manipulate the plant’s immune system to allow colonialization or can be resistant to plant defence responses such as the biosynthesis of specialized metabolites.
