This project aims to enhance food production efficiency by developing new machinery that integrates field and lab equipment for plant breeding. It seeks to streamline the selection process of crop varieties, ultimately improving food security through increased productivity.
In order to feed the larger, more urban and richer population, food production must increase by 70%, and annual cereal production will need to rise to about 3 billion tonnes from 2.1 billion today.
However, there are limited opportunities to expand the area of agricultural land without huge detrimental impact on the natural environment.
As a consequence, sustainable increase of food supply must be based on productivity improvements.
