This project explores the historical and sociological aspects of intersexuality in Colombia, analyzing how medical discourses have shaped understandings of gender and identity since the late 1950s. It aims to challenge traditional views and promote inclusivity regarding gender diversity.
Historically, intersexuality has been a paradox for scientific, biological and sociological interpretation of sex. A body that does not correspond to normal parameters imposed by the medicalization process has been elusively understood by patriarchal and feminist discourses alike.
Despite the importance of the sex/gender dichotomy for second wave feminism, this false dichotomy needs to be reviewed in light of the new queer and poststructuralist theories.
