This project explores the evolutionary transition from single-celled organisms to multicellular animals. By developing genetic tools for close unicellular relatives of metazoans, it aims to understand the ancestral functions of key genes and the evolution of multicellularity through cell biology and genomics.
How multicellular animals (metazoans) emerged from their single-celled ancestor remains a long-standing evolutionary question.
Recent genome data has shown that the unicellular ancestor of metazoans already had a complex gene repertoire for genes involved in cell adhesion, cell signaling and transcriptional regulation, including integrins, cadherins, T-box genes, and protein tyrosine kinases.
