This project utilizes ancient quids, or masticated plant fibers, to analyze DNA from Indigenous peoples of the Americas. By studying this DNA, researchers aim to uncover human population history, dietary changes, and health impacts over time, without destructive sampling of skeletal remains.
Palaeogenomics has revolutionised our understanding of human population history at the biological and sociocultural level by analysing thousands of ancient human genomes sequenced from skeletal remains.
