REDEM investigates the declining legitimacy of elections in Europe, as voter participation wanes and political parties diverge from democratic values. The project seeks to understand the implications of these trends for the future of democratic governance.
Elections are supposed to legitimise governments.
However, it is elections themselves whose legitimacy seemsto be in question.
Voters are increasingly unwilling to vote, even at national elections and, when they do, areattracted to parties whose stated platforms and appeal seem flatly at odds with democratic norms of freedom andequality.
