This project focuses on studying unique calcium-dependent protein kinases in Apicomplexan organisms, particularly Plasmodium, which causes malaria. The goal is to understand their role in the parasite's life cycle and evaluate their potential as drug targets for malaria treatment.
The aim of the proposed project is a characterization of a set of unique and understudied kinases that have essential functions in Apicomplexan life cycle control.
These kinases, which interestingly are only found in plants and protists and not in animals or fungi, are calcium-dependent and are thought to allow for a translation of intra- or extracellular Ca2+ signals into an appropriate cellular response.
