REOPTIMIZE focuses on enhancing understanding of how organic matter remineralises in the mesopelagic zone of the ocean, using advanced robotic platforms to gather data on particle size and oxygen consumption. This research aims to refine estimates of the biological carbon pump's role in climate regulation.
Remineralisation of the particulate matter that sinks from the surface to the deep ocean is a crucial component of the biological carbon pump, because it ultimately influences the Earth’s climate.
