The Rhizomia project focuses on developing a bioreactor technology to cultivate medicinal plants, particularly ginseng, at an accelerated growth rate. This innovation aims to meet the rising global demand for active ingredients in health products.
Out of 391,000 plants known to science only 31,000 have practical applications. 18,000 are classified as medicinal plants, which means they have a documented medicinal effect.
But only 150 plants are cultivated industrially.
Medicinal plants are a huge global market, conservatively estimated at €70bn+ in 2015.
Plant roots provide many of the important biologically active ingredients found in nutraceuticals, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, food additives & other products.
