This project aims to develop a safe, non-viral method for generating induced pluripotent stem cells from adult human cells. It focuses on creating a delivery system for therapeutic genes to advance regenerative medicine.
A crucial goal of regenerative medicine is to generate desired cells, to build a specific tissue, from pluripotent stem cells directly derived from a patient's cells.
These cells are known as induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells and they have a potential therapeutic use as they offer an alternative to the controversial use of embryonic stem cells and, additionally, they avoid the issue of immune rejection.
