This project introduces a novel food packaging technology that allows consumers to assess food freshness accurately. By removing a metallized layer on demand, it aims to reduce food waste and improve food safety.
Each year ca. 89m tonnes of food in EU is irrecoverably wasted (i.e. 179 kg per capita) and the projection for 2020 – if no action will be taken – is 126m tonnes (i.e. a 40% increase).
At the same time ca.79m EU citizens live beneath the poverty line and ca.16m strongly depend on food aid from the charitable organizations. A lot of food is thrown into the garbage just because the expiry date does not provide an accurate indication of the food`s freshness, instead reflecting the worst case scenar…
