This project examines the decline in fertility rates in Southern Europe, focusing on the individual and societal factors that have led to fewer births at later ages. It aims to analyze demographic data from Spain and Italy to understand the complexities of this trend.
The project will provide a renewed perspective on Southern Europe fertility decline in the second part of the twentieth Century until today.
The forces that have driven this epochal change have been broadly identified, with an established correlation between fertility decline and modernization as characterised by industrialization, urbanization, increasing education.
However, at the individual level, the mechanisms that have been driving this general process of change are still blurred.
