The project aims to understand seismic activity in mid-crustal depths by studying exhumed ductile shear zones in the Northern Apennines of Italy. It combines fieldwork and advanced analytical techniques to investigate the mechanisms of seismic localization and fluid interactions.
Deformation zones may localize seismicity not only at upper crustal levels along brittle faults, but also at greater depth along ductile shear zones.
The latter is at odds to classic rheological models predicting shear zones to creep and behave aseismically.
