SMART-CAD aims to develop a stent-based sensor for continuous monitoring and treatment of in-stent restenosis in coronary artery disease patients. The project combines microwave sensing technology with radiofrequency identification to enhance patient outcomes in cardiovascular health.
In Europe, out of all types of cardiovascular diseases, coronary artery disease (CAD) is the most common cause of death (more than 40%).
The leading cause of CAD is a blockage in the coronary artery due to plaque deposition.
Balloon angioplasty and stenting are the two solutions used to treat CAD patients.
However, in both treatments, restenosis (plaque re-deposition) occurs after a few months/years, and the only solution is to repeat the treatment to reopen the blocked artery.
