SmartDress aims to automate the maintenance of resistance spot welding tips in automotive production. By optimizing tip quality, the project seeks to reduce production line stoppages, enhance efficiency, and enable cost-effective aluminum vehicle manufacturing.
High volume automotive production (such as body-in-white construction) operations rely heavily on RSW (resistance spot welding), and suffer significant losses of output (and resulting revenue) as a consequence of frequent production line stoppages.
