The SMARTHEAL project aims to develop a smart magnetic anastomosis implant that enhances healing and detects complications in colorectal surgery. By integrating micro-sensors and wireless technology, the implant monitors inflammation and edema, potentially improving surgical outcomes and reducing healthcare costs.
Colorectal cancer affects over 1.93 million people worldwide each year.
In most cases, surgery to remove the tumour is necessary, and intestinal continuity is restored through an anastomosis.
