This project investigates how stable isotopes in Mediterranean pines can be used to understand tree responses to climate change. It aims to enhance reforestation efforts by identifying suitable genetic material and monitoring long-term ecological changes in forest ecosystems.
Global climate change, combined with the further increase of atmospheric CO2, is expected to affect plant growth and performance and, as a consequence, the spatial distribution of species in terrestrial ecosystems within the next 50 to 100 years.
In the Mediterranean region, the combined impact of current aridity with climate change will particularly threaten forest ecosystems.
