SONCITIES focuses on integrating sound into urban design by exploring how urban soundscapes affect communities. It aims to develop a new framework for sonic urbanism through ethnographic research and creative interventions, enhancing the acoustic quality of cities for healthier and more inclusive environments.
Architecture and urban design, disciplines heavily rooted in visual epistemologies, have long neglected sound, or else treated it in very limited ways: as a physical quantity that can be modelled and controlled; or else as noise, something to be reduced or eliminated.
The neglect of sound on the part of the built environment professions has been damaging for cities, which suffer from poor acoustic design.
