The SOURCE project investigates the transport and transformation of organic carbon from soil to oceans. It employs advanced techniques to trace the export of soil organic carbon across the land-ocean interface, enhancing our understanding of the global carbon cycle.
Comprehensive knowledge about fluxes and processes related to the continental erosion and the subsequent delivery of organic carbon (OC) to the oceans via rivers is one of the priorities for a better understanding of the global carbon cycle.
However, the fate of terrestrial OC in rivers as well as in the oceans is far from understood.
In particular, the transport and transformations of soil OC in the oceans is poorly known although it is the largest terrestrial carbon pool.
