This project aims to uncover the molecular mechanisms behind programmed cell death processes in Drosophila sperm development. It seeks to enhance understanding of male fertility and the genetic causes of infertility by examining conserved cellular destruction pathways.
Apoptosis, the major form of programmed cell death (PCD), is executed by caspases.
However, activation of caspases can also promote a variety of vital cellular processes.
Furthermore, cell death can sometimes proceed in the absence of apoptotic caspases by triggering alternative cell death (ACD) pathways.
